“The gift of the Dhamma excels all gifts;
the taste of the Dhamma excels all tastes;
delight in the Dhamma excels all delights.
The eradication of craving overcomes all ills.”
–Dhammapada 354
In The Discourse on Happiness, the Buddha reminded us that “not missing the occasion to learn the Dharma” is a deep practice, teaching us that:
“To persevere and be open to change,
to have regular contact with monks and nuns,
and to fully participate in Dharma discussions —
this is the greatest happiness.”
Although it may sound unusual to say that participating in Dharma discussions is cause for great happiness, it makes sense when we understand the joy, wellbeing, and peace that can arise as we learn how to more skillfully work with difficulties and suffering in our lives and in the world. We are grateful to have the Dharma available to us at Dinh Quang Temple, through the careful and joyful example and words of Master Thay, our monastics, and committed community members. Whatever we are doing, we aspire to dedicate our time together to practicing the Buddha’s teachings, personally and collectively. This is true whether we are studying a sutra, drinking tea, eating a meal, or enjoying a song and a good conversation.
Formal Dharma talks take place in the Buddha Hall, while Dharma classes and discussions usually take place in the Dharma (Teaching) Hall or classroom. We hold our English-speaking Dharma classes after chanting and meditation, Sunday mornings around 10:10 – 11:15 a.m. and Wednesday evenings around 7:10 to 8:00 p.m.
Online participation is also available for those who cannot join in person. Our English-speaking services are live-streamed on our Facebook Page and our Dharma classes can be joined via Google Meet. Accessing the class via web browser or app requires a Google account (audio or video). You can also access the class from any phone (audio only). Please contact Giac Vien for more information or to receive instructions on how to join the class.
If you would like to receive regular emails for announcements, program planning, and Dharma discussions, you are welcome to join our Google Group email list by clicking on “Ask to join group” and following the instructions.
We are also a member temple of the Dharma Teacher Order, which provides a four year program leading to a Certificate in Buddhist Studies.
In all of these opportunities, our emphasis is on practice, rather than merely expanding our knowledge. As the Buddha further taught in The Discourse on Happiness, the Dharma invites us “to live diligently and attentively” so that we can “perceive the Noble Truths” and “realize Nirvana.” The beautiful fruits of such a practice open up a pathway of great freedom, peace, and joy:
“To live in the world
with your heart undisturbed by the world,
with all sorrows ended, dwelling in peace —
this is the greatest happiness.
“For he or she who accomplishes this,
unvanquished wherever she goes,
always he is safe and happy —
happiness lives within oneself.”
